Atenas, Costa Rica
Nestled in the foothills on the western edge of the Central Valley, the picturesque rural town of Atenas offers panoramic views of the Central Valley and nearby volcanoes. Atenas has a friendly, small town atmosphere, and according to National Geographic, the best climate in the world, owing to its remarkable consistency of weather; daily temperatures hover around 80 degrees F during the day and dip into the 60s at night.
Located 20 km from Juan Santamaria International Airport, Atenas is surrounded by mountains, coffee plantations and fruit orchards. The town center features a historical white church that dates back to 1830s, and a picturesque central park lined with palm trees; the local story is that the church and the park square lie on an earthquake fault.
Being a prosperous agricultural area, Atenas hosts a weekly farmer's market where fresh produce, flowers and meats can be purchased directly from local growers. Town facilities include a community health center, pharmacies, doctors, dentists, tennis court, fitness center, swimming pools, banks, and many bed-and-breakfasts. Cafes and restaurants line the park, and the central market, a block southwest of the park, bustles with vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and cheeses to shoes and jewelry.
The temperate climate and friendly atmosphere of Atenas has attracted many retired couples from around the world in search of a tranquil, small town life. An expatriate community of North Americans and Europeans now call Atenas home, and several shops and restaurants reflect their culture and cuisine.
