Nestled in the foothills on the western edge of the Central Valley, the picturesque rural town of Atenas offers panoramic views of the Central Valley and nearby volcanoes. Located 20 km from Juan Santamaria International Airport, Atenas is surrounded by mountains, coffee plantations and fruit orchards. The town center features a historical white church that dates back to 1830s, and a picturesque central park lined with palm trees; the local story is that the church and the park square lie on an earthquake fault.
Being a prosperous agricultural area, Atenas hosts a weekly farmer's market where fresh produce, flowers and meats can be purchased directly from local growers. Town facilities include a community health center, pharmacies, doctors, dentists, tennis court, fitness center, swimming pools, banks, and many bed-and-breakfasts. Cafes and restaurants line the park, and the central market, a block southwest of the park, bustles with vendors selling everything from fresh fruits and cheeses to shoes and jewelry.
