Playa Bejuco, Costa Rica

Playa Bejuco

Not to be confused with the Playa Bejuco in Puntarenas province, this Playa Bejuco is located north of San Miguel and south of Islita in the Nicoya Peninsula in the southern part of Guanacaste province. This 3.5 km stretch of beach offers moderate to very strong waves for adventurous surfers, and a large mangrove swamp at the mouth of Bejuco River which birdwatchers can enjoy. There are many rocky areas and coves which make it an interesting beach to walk and explore, and there are many good swimming areas, and tidal pools near the Bejuco Point.

Like its counterpart in Puntarenas, Playa Bejuco is basically a fishing village, free from commercialism and crowd. Some fishermen supplement their livelihood by offering boat rides and fishing trips. Horseback riding on the beach is also popular. There is no tourist accommodation on the beach, but there are beach houses around that can be rented. Nearby towns include San Miguel, Coyote, and Costa de Oro, where more accommodations and restaurants can be found. Playa Bejuco is not easy to get to, but those who brave the dirt and gravel roads will be rewarded by an adventure of a life time.
