Playa Bejuco, Costa Rica
Not to be confused with the Playa Bejuco in Guanacaste province, this Playa Bejuco is located halfway between Jaco and Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast in Puntarenas province. Although it is only 30 to 40 minutes drive from its two bustling, sophisticated neighbors, the atmosphere at Playa Bejuco could not be more different. If you are a seasoned surfer looking for quality waves and plenty of space to yourself, you would adore this beach. This is one of the few surfing hotspots in Costa Rica that has stayed under the radar; no crowd, no big hotels. With surfing conditions generally excellent throughout the year, some of the best waves can reach up to sixteen feet at high tide.
Awarded the ‘Blue Flag’ title for its cleanliness and pristine condition, the beach is lined with lush tropical vegetation, covered by volcanic black sand, and bordered by an estuary with mangroves which attracts many species of birds. The village at Playa Bejuco is mainly a fishing community, but the locals do offer tourist activities such as bird watching tours, ATV excursions, sport fishing, canopy tours, horseback riding and river rafting. While a handful of restaurants can satisfy most appetite for breakfast and lunch, for dinner and night entertainment most enjoy heading north to Jacó or south to Manuel Antonio for a wider selection and more lively scenes.
