Playa Flamingo, Costa Rica

Playa Flamingo lies in the heart of Guanacaste's Gold Coast, about 45 minutes from the international airport in Liberia (LIR) and 5 hours from San Jose (SJO). A few kilometers to the north is Playa Potrero, and to the south, Playa Brasilito and Conchal Beach.

Flamingo reputedly was the original Costa Rican hotspot for the international jetset, and still is today one of the most popular beach destinations in Costa Rica. The images of its fine and beautiful white sand and Mediterranean-like blue sea attract sunseekers from far and wide. With majestic mountains and the scenic Potrero Bay as its backdrop, a modern township that is neither under or over-developed with upscale shops and restaurants, fine lodging options and a full array of water sports and land tours to satisfy all kinds of recreational pursuits, the area of Flamingo is arguably the most appealing of all Costa Rican seaside resorts.

Vacation rental accommodation around Playa Flamingo ranges from hillside luxury villas at the northern ridge of the beach with phenomenal ocean views to reasonably priced vacation homes located within walking distance to town. Some of the most luxurious condo villas for rent are located right on the beachfront at the southern end of the beach after driving past the commercial center, near the end of the beachfront road.

Known as the ‘sportfishing capital’ of the Nicoya Peninsula, Flamingo is well known for its Marina, the first to be established in the country, which offers world-class sportfishing and the region’s largest marina service. As more and more affluent residential communities began to take shape in Flamingo and Potrero, the range of amenities available in the village has widened to include a casino and disco, fine dining restaurants, boutique shops and galleries, as well as many tour services that feature canopy adventure, scuba diving, snorkeling, sunset cruises, riverboat jungle tours, horseback riding, ATV exploration, hiking, sailing and parasailing.

To minimize driving time, tourists who fly to San Jose have the option of catching a connection flight to Tamarindo, followed by a 15-minute taxi ride from the Tamarindo airstrip.
