Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is known for its huge year-round waves and it is said to have one of the strongest surf breaks in the world. Just 8 km south of one of Costa Rica’s most famous beach destinations, Jaco, Playa Hermosa is itself world renowned as the venue of numerous international, regional and national surfing tournaments, the most famous of which is the International Quicksilver Surf Championships held annually in August, which draws hundreds of competitors and fans from all over the world.

Between surfing tournaments, Playa Hermosa is relatively low-key and offers a quiet diversion for those wanting a change of scene from Jaco beach. While Jaco is a surfing haven for surfers of all skill levels, Playa Hermosa is best enjoyed by expert surfers, as waves here are known to reach as high as 13 feet.

For non-surfers, Playa Hermosa is a good base from where to explore various beaches along the central Pacific coast, such as Playa Esterillos, Playa Bejuco, Playa Bandera and Palo Seco. The scenery of lush farmland and vast oil palm plantations enroute makes the drive enjoyable.

On Hermosa beach a number of beachfront hotels and cabinas offer surf-in-surf-out locations, as described in Playa Hermosa virtual tour. Ocean view villas and private homes are available for rentals in several residential communities near the beach, including beachfront houses in Hermosa Palms located at the south part of the beach.
