Playa Negra, Costa Rica
South of Playa Avellanas and 6 km west of the town of Paraiso, Playa Negra, like its name suggests, has dark sand, and a rocky coastline. Well known as another surfers’ paradise on the Pacific coast of north Guanacaste, Playa Negra offers world-class waves that are said to be the most consistent surf breaks in the region. Moreover, the surf at Playa Negra is a reef, making it ideal for newcomers as well as old timers.
Cabinas, bed and breakfasts, private vacation rentals and a few hotels can be found at the beach, mainly targeted at the surfing crowd. For those who are not here for the surfing, head for the south side of the beach to find peace and solitude. There is no public transportation or paved road to Playa Negra, but you can join tour groups that frequently depart from Tamarindo, through the travel agencies in town. Or, if you do not mind driving over rough terrains, it is possible to rent a 4 wheel drive in Tamarindo and navigate your own way to Playa Negra.
