Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica is reached after about 5 kilometers of dirt road that branches off from the coastal road that continues on to Panama. The split is located a little more than an hour’s drive or about 59 km south of Limon, which is about a three and a half to four hours' drive from San Jose.

The coastal road from Limon to Puerto Viejo offers a delightful drive along the Caribbean coast, passing numerous fishing villages and farming communities. In between, you get glimpses of the turquoise Caribbean sea and surprisingly miles upon miles of untouched and uninhabited beaches. An enjoyable experience for those discovering this part of Costa Rica for the first time.

Like Limon, a distinct Caribbean flavor is prevalent in Puerto Viejo, a feel of vitality unique in southern Caribbean. As you enter the town from north to south the township spreads along the road on both sides; all the life is on this seafront road until it reaches the end of town and continuing on to other small beach communities further south.

You can sense the pioneering spirit of the people who have moved here from around the world and set up businesses here for an alternative way of life. It’s no wonder many refer to Puerto Viejo as a global village.

Simple but charming wooden houses feature many colors, shapes and sizes with creative signs everywhere. With the road curving south and the ocean on your left you can see the beaches from the main road as you pass surf shops, cabins, sodas, souvenir shops, hostels, restaurants, etc. Imagine all the town amenities being just a few steps from the beach! This town is as beach-front as can be.
