Tamarindo as a beach resort is among the most popular destinations for Costa Rica vacations and the most visited surfing beach in Guanacaste. Situated on the ‘Gold Coast’ it is about 70 kilometers or 30 minutes from Liberia, which has an international airport (LIR) and is the gateway to all Guanacaste. Many international flights arrive at Liberia and the area has grown into the premier tourism destination of the country, offering all the creature comforts and amenities international tourists expect. Tourist accommodations range from luxury Tamarindo hotels to beach front vacation rentals including beach condos, ocean view penthouse suites, luxury beach villas, family friendly rentals to simple vacation homes and cabins, all within walking distance to the restaurants and shops in town.

Tamarindo Beach became world famous after it was featured as the first stop on an epic worldwide surf journey in the popular movie ‘Endless Summer II’; it has become increasingly popular ever since, with surfers spilling over to Playa Langosta, Playa Grande, Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra. All of these beaches are a short drive from Tamarindo. To learn more about the beaches in northern Guanacaste visit Northern Guanacaste Attractions.

Besides surfing, there is a dazzling array of tours and activities in Tamarindo for families and couples: catamaran sailing, sea or river kayaking, world-class golf, biking, hiking, visiting mangrove forest and wildlife reserves, backcountry ATV tours, sunset cruises, canopy tours, etc., and best of all, a 3-km long blue-flag white sand beach that is great for just chilling out and relaxing is right on your door step! Off shore you can take day trips to nearby islands to scuba dive or snorkel, and sport fishing off Tamarindo and Flamingo has long been world-famous.

A Costa Rica honeymoon in Tamarindo can be both fun and romantic, with endless options of things to do together and candle lit dinners in many fine restaurants. Tamarindo is also a hot spot for couples getting married in Costa Rica nowadays, with professional wedding planners and photographers available to orchestrate the whole event.

Tamarindo town itself has in recent years evolved into an interesting cultural melting pot, full of international flavor; more than a dozen different languages can be heard spoken around town. The range of international cuisines, the vibrant night life and the numerous surf shops, beauty spas, arts and crafts galleries, pottery shops, gifts and souvenirs stores, have all become a part of its attractions. Comes evening, select from over 50 restaurants, have fun at the casinos, or meet up with friends at a hotel bar or go listen to a live band in one of the discos.

Getting around town is easy, most people walk and many taxis are available. There is no shortage of rental cars, scooters, motorcycles or bicycles. All the shopping is at your doorstep; from your beach condo, vacation home or hotels you can easily walk to stores, Laundromats, banks and internet cafes. Bus services to nearby towns are regular and reliable. Beach gear and everything you need for a beach vacation are all available here, so you can pack light. To ease your mind, there are scores of pharmacies and several 24-hour medical clinics.

Like the rest of mid north Guanacaste the climate in Tamarindo is warm and arid with temperature ranging from 80 to 100 degree Fahrenheit year round. Those looking for vacation rentals in Tamarindo in the low season will find great value for money and still enjoy pleasant weather despite of some rainfall.

For those flying into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) near San Jose there are connection flights to Tamarindo via Sansa or Nature Air which land at the Tamarindo regional airport 3 km north of town. If driving from San Jose, allow about 5 hours for the 260 km journey.
