It is not a good idea to drive too far into the mountains, especially in the rainy season when rain can come down very quickly and create impassable conditions on some mountain roads.

The best way to experience the rainforest is to go on a guided walk through a national park like Corcovado National or a wildlife refuge like Hacienda Baru near Dominical. However, if you enjoy hiking, from your vacation rental you can probably just take a long walk into the hills; more often than not you will enjoy great views of the Pacific Ocean too. If are driving around Dominical, get out of the car and explore a little bit on foot. It is generally safe in the dry season to do so. In the rainy season you should get advice on road conditions before you head out.
