What is the food like in a typical local Costa Rican hotel?

Do not expect the food portions to bear much resemblance to what you usually find in hotels or chain eateries in the USA. Portions are smaller here, even in very good hotels...

Food quality is probably the ‘weakest link’ in the Costa Rican tourism industry. Even in branded hotels, the taste will be pretty average for taste buds that have traveled around the world. Not poor; but not particularly memorable. On the positive side, there is no worry about the standard of hygiene; all restaurants and hotels are regularly inspected by authority form the health ministry. For a chance of experiencing top quality cuisine, you would probably have to take a vacation in a 5-star hotel, or one that is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, or a member of the Small Distinctive Hotels of Costa Rica, or a member of the Small Luxury Hotels.
