Short taxi rides in Costa Rica are inexpensive. For taxi trips outside city limits, a fixed taxi fare can be negotiated beforehand. If you have to find a taxi with a driver who speaks English, try the taxi stand outside the nearest hotel. Taxis can be hailed or called ahead; most business establishments will readily help you call for a taxi. If it happens to be around rush hours, be prepared to wait for some time for a taxi to arrive, especially on a rainy day. If you cannot get to a phone, head for the city square or central park where taxis are normally stationed. All licensed taxis carry a yellow triangle on the doors, and are equipped with meters; you should always insist that the meter be turned on at the start of the journey.
