69 km from the Daniel Oduber International Airport, Playa Tamarindo is a 3-km long blue-flag beach which became world famous after it was featured as the first stop on an epic worldwide surf journey in the popular movie ‘Endless Summer II.’ It has become increasingly popular ever since, with surfers spilling over to neighboring beaches like Playa Langosta, Playa Grande and Playa Negra; all of these beaches are a short drive from Tamarindo. Today, Tamarindo is has evolved as one of the most popular beach towns in Costa Rica, offering all the creature comforts and amenities that international tourists expect.

The town has developed into quite a cultural melting pot, full of international flavor; within a day, you can hear a dozen different languages being spoken and enjoy ethnic cuisines from around the world. Apart from surfing, fishing and golf, there is a dazzling array of activities for families and couples to take part together, including sailing, river kayaking, boating through mangrove forest, visiting wildlife reserves, backcountry ATV tours, catamaran and sunset cruises, and canopy zip-line tours. Back in town, you can indulge in beauty spas, visit art galleries, crafts and pottery shops.

There is no shortage of local transport to help you get around Tamarindo and to the nearby beaches; you can rent cars, scooters, motorcycles or bicycles. It is easy to get around on foot from any beach condos or villas in Tamarindo; you can easily walk to grocery stores, pharmacies, clothing boutiques, laundromats and internet cafes. Comes sunset hour, tourists and locals alike all enjoy walking to the beach to admire the resplendent sunset, which promises to be unforgettable. In the evening, select from over 40 restaurants of international varieties; try your luck at the casinos; meet up with friends at one of the many attractive hotel bars.

Beach gear, surfboards, boogie boards and equipment of all types are available for rent from specialty stores in Tamarindo. In recent years, Tamarindo has also become a hotspot for couples getting married in Costa Rica.

For those flying into the international airport outside Liberia, Tamarindo is half an hour’s drive away. If landing at Juan Santamaria International Airport outside San Jose, it is possible to catch a connection flight to Tamarindo via Sansa or Nature Air, which lands at the Tamarindo regional airport 3 km north of town. If driving from San Jose, allow about 5 hours for the 260 km journey.
