South of Playa Avellanas and 6 km west of the town of Paraiso, Playa Negra, like its name suggests, has black sand, and a rocky coastline. It is another surfers’ paradise with world-class waves, with some of the most consistent waves and surf breaks in the region, and the surf at Playa Negra is ideal for novices as well as seasoned surfers.

Accommodation here is limited to a number of budget hotels and private house rentals mainly for the surfing crowd. There is no public transportation or paved road to Playa Negra, but you can join the tour groups that are frequently organized by the tour operators in Tamarindo, or you can rent a 4 wheel drive in Tamarindo to navigate your own way there.
