Minivans and Buses - Traveling in Costa Rica

For first time visitors, small air-conditioned buses and minivans are by far the best option for traveling to your vacation destination from the airport. There are half a dozen or more companies to choose from and all can be booked online in advance or with a toll free call. Some offer regular scheduled service as well as private pickup service; in the later, you have the vehicle exclusively to yourself or your group, which usually accommodates up to 8 people comfortably, and you get to depart from the airport as soon as you are ready, as opposed to having to wait until the scheduled departure time as is the case with regular scheduled service. On exit from the arrival lounge you will spot some minivans or buses waiting by the curbside and with advance booking the driver will normally be looking for you with your name written on a handheld signboard.

If you already have a car booked at your destination, the minivan driver will drop you where the hired car will be waiting, or you can have the hired car delivered to your hotel or villa. This arrangement eliminates the stress of finding your way around and out of San Jose and ensures a relaxing journey, in case your destination is several hours away on the coast.

Depending on where you plan to spend your time in Costa Rica, a rental car may not be necessary at all for you to enjoy a vacation. You can visit cities and towns and all the principal tourist attractions in the region by traveling in buses and minivans and by joining organized day tours; your lodging host or local travel and tour agents can arrange for you to be picked up right from your hotel or villa.
